AMA Superbike racing

How it all got started

The AMA U.S. Superbike Championship traces its roots back to 1934, when the AMA first organized motorcycle road racing in the United States. Over the years, the AMA has organized many different road race series to accommodate the continuously evolving technology of motorcycles.

The AMA U.S. Superbike Championship was created in 1976 to provide an affordable, level playing field for professional race teams, and as a platform for motorcycle manufacturers to showcase their production sport-performance models. The success of the AMA Superbike formula led to international adoption by FIM and subsequent implementation in virtually every developed country in the world.

A major change occurred in 1986, when the AMA's professional road-racing program diversified from the overall Grand National Championship program. Prior to 1986, riders accumulated points in a variety of race formats including road racing, dirt oval, short-track and Tourist-Trophy events. While separate road-racing championships were awarded, points collected from the various race formats could be combined and applied toward a single elite goal: the coveted AMA Grand National Championship title. Since 1986, the AMA Superbike Series, road race support classes and Grand National Championship have existed as independent championship series.

Today, the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship stands as the world's premier national Superbike series, and tours with the AMA U.S. Supersport Championship and three additional top-caliber bike classes: AMA Superstock, 250 Grand Prix, and the Formula Xtreme series. The AMA U.S. Superbike Championship and support classes are defined by some of the closest and most heated competition in motorsports. Each season, increases in rider talent and motorcycle technology redefine the limits of personal performance and push the laws of physics to the very edge.

To better reflect motorcycle market changes and create a more level playing field, in 2003 AMA Pro Racing announced several rule-changes for the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship.

Starting in 2003, the AMA Superbike Championship is open to competitors using 1000cc multi-cylinder machines with specific restrictions on weight and engine modifications. Given these restrictions, it is expected that 750cc four-cylinder and 1000cc twin-cylinder machines will remain competitive in the series.

Since 1976, the AMA U.S. Superbike Championship has enjoyed steady growth in teams, events and audiences, which have risen alongside the popularity of street sport bikes and increased television broadcasts. The world's top motorcycle manufacturers develop and showcase their leading-edge technology at AMA U.S. Superbike races. The adage, "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday," still holds true. These elite championship teams attract an international field of top-caliber racers from every corner of the globe.

The AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Championship and support classes are followed by millions of fans around the world, at race events, on television broadcasts and via the Internet.

Now that you know a bit about the history of the championship, here’s a detailed look at the points payout structure and more details about each class.

Championship points payout

Points are awarded to the top-30 finishers in all classes according to the following schedule:

Pos.   Pts.   Pos.   Pts.
1 - 36   16 - 15
2 - 32   17 - 14
3 - 29   18 - 13
4 - 27   19 - 12
5 - 26   20 - 11
6 - 25   21 - 10
7 - 24   22 - 9
8 - 23   23 - 8
9 - 22   24 - 7
10 - 21   25 - 6
11 - 20   26 - 5
12 - 19   27 - 4
13 - 18   28 - 3
14 - 17   29 - 2
15 - 16   30 - 1

Riders who qualify for a final event must participate in the race and complete 50 percent of the race laps run in order to receive championship points. However, riders will receive purse money for their earned grid positions if there are purse-paying positions beyond the number of riders listed in the results. But there are other ways to earn additional points.

Pole Position point: A bonus point will be paid to the fastest qualifier or pole position winner in all classes.

Lap Leader point: One bonus point will be paid to the rider leading the most laps in each final event. In the event of a tie for most laps led, the rider in the lead position last will be awarded the bonus point.

Believe it or not, the need for championship tie-breakers is large. There have been a number of championships decided by a tie-breaker. In the event that there is a tie for a championship, that tie will be broken based on the number of wins in the series. If that does not break a tie, the number of second-place finishes will be compared, then thirds, fourths, etc. until the tie is broken. If a tie remains, the best finish in the last race will determine the champion. Ties will be broken as they occur as well as at the end of the year.

Coulthard’s Red Bull auctioned on eBay

A lucky enthusiast has bought themselves a slice of Formula One history after snapping up the Red Bull driven by David Coulthard at the 2007 British Grand Prix on website eBay for €210,050. The online auction was held by the team on Sunday night in aid of the Wings for Life charity, a foundation set up to fund research into spinal injuries.

The RB3 went under the hammer with its special ‘Faces for Charity’ livery, which the team ran during last year's Silverstone event. More than 50,000 Formula One fans donated money in exchange for their photographs becoming part of a huge collage which covered the car’s bodywork. The car’s new owner has chosen to remain anonymous.

Heidfeld: BMW Sauber have taken 'a huge leap'

Nick Heidfeld has hailed BMW Sauber’s progress after their strong performance in Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix. While team mate Robert Kubica brought his F1.08 home second, the Pole’s best-ever F1 result, Heidfeld scored his and the team’s maiden fastest lap on his way to sixth place.

Based on BMW Sauber’s modest showings in pre-season testing, few had expected them to be able to challenge the two top teams, and given their tally of 19 points from the first two races - nine more than in the opening two rounds of 2007 - even Heidfeld admitted he was surprised at their improvement.

"I didn't expect that we would be able to match the pace of the McLarens in Malaysia, and even be slightly faster than them in the closing stages of the race,” Heidfeld told BMW Sauber’s official website. “Compared to the off-season tests, we have made a huge leap."

Starting fifth on the grid, Heidfeld’s race was compromised early on by a first-corner tussle with Toyota’s Jarno Trulli. However, the German fought back, pulling off arguably the best passing move of the afternoon, and then clocking the fastest lap on his penultimate tour of Sepang.

"Overtaking Alonso and Coulthard at the same time, in the opening stages of the race, was really big fun," the 30-year old admitted. "For me, this was the crucial move on the way to securing the best possible result after having lost several positions due to the close encounter with Trulli."

Team principal Mario Theissen was understandably delighted with the result. Furthermore, he is convinced there is plenty more to come from the F1.08 - enough, in fact, for the German-Swiss team to achieve their declared aim of a 2008 victory.

“We have not yet tapped our car's full potential,” said Theissen. “Therefore, I'm confident that we will be able to achieve the goal we've set ourselves for the 2008 season: to close the gap to the top teams and to secure our maiden Grand Prix win. Everybody is working hard to help us realise this goal, at the racetrack, during testing, as well as in Munich and Hinwil.”

Heidfeld and Kubica lie third and fifth respectively in the driver standings, while BMW Sauber are second to McLaren in the constructors’ table.

Ferrari classics to go on show at Bahrain race

During the forthcoming Bahrain Grand Prix fans will get the chance to get up close and personal with an array of historic Ferrari Formula One cars, as the Italian company continues celebrations to mark its 60th anniversary with a special exhibition.

Amongst the cars on display will be a priceless 166MM sports car, one of the first to be built by the legendary Enzo Ferrari following World War Two, and a 1959 version of the Ferrari Dino 246, the car in which Mike Hawthorn became 1958 world champion. Another rarity to be exhibited will be the Pininfarina Sigma design study, built to demonstrate possible advances in driver safety and based on the 1967 Ferrari 312 Formula One car.

“There are very few motor manufacturers with the panache, achievement and heritage of Ferrari,” said Martin Whitaker, CEO of the Bahrain International Circuit. “Scuderia Ferrari is one of the biggest sporting brands in the world, with 60 years of achievement in the world of Formula One and international sports car racing, and we are delighted to have this feast of iconic cars on display at our Grand Prix.”

Alongside the classics from its racing heritage, a selection of the Italian company’s road cars will also be exhibited, including a 1967 Ferrari 275 NART Spyder - one of only ten built. The 1988 F40, 1995 F50 and 2003 Enzo will also be on show, alongside the unique Ferrari P4/5, a one-off US$4 million masterpiece.

The event will take place at the Bahrain International Circuit’s new-look Formula One village from 4-6 April.
